Portable Concrete Batching on Remote Cell Tower Project

Cell tower requires portable concrete mixer

Portable cement mixer builds cell towerWhen Global Tower Service needed a cell tower foundation poured in the top of the Chuckwalla Mountains, they turned to the Cart-Away CUBE as a portable concrete batching system.

The remote location and the need to pour over 30 cubic yards of concrete made this portable cement mixer a very practical solution. Getting a ready-mixed truck to the site was not cost effective and using a smaller contractor mixer would have slowed the construction progress to a crawl.

When the cell tower project had ended, Cart-Away asked the project manager how the CUBE worked as a portable concrete batching mixer, and he came back with:

“That thing is awesome! It worked out perfectly!”

The truck allowed them to move the mixer closer to each of the pour sites. They also used super-sacks to put the raw materials onto the CUBE’s integrated loading conveyor. They employed their telehandler to deliver the super-sack mix over the top of the truck and to the conveyor loading area.

Building a cell tower up in the mountains is an exercise in good construction logistics, and Global Tower has proven that they have the resources and the tools to get the job done. Cart-Away is pleased to know that the CUBE perform so well on this project…

Adding Trucks to the Portable Concrete Mixer Fleet

Concrete mixing in trucks and trailers

Over the years we have helped hundreds of ready-mixed concrete suppliers get established within their community.  And during that time we have seen many different combinations of portable cement mixing solutions.

The Rock Yard

In most cases the ready-mixed concrete location uses a standard Cart-Away material batching system that has been adapted to load into both trailers and trucks.  We use a grade separation ramp that allows the truck to be lowered down for loading with the standard conveyor. Then when they load trailers, they just swing the conveyor over to the higher slab and into the drum of the trailer.

It is not uncommon for these high-volume locations to produce hundreds of yards per week. And with better than average profit margins, it is a business model that is paying high dividends for these business owners.

Cart-Away portable concrete mixers bring in the self-delivery crowd and the trucks provide the additional delivery option to the customer base.

Concrete Mixer Maintenance Champion – River City Rentals

Good concrete mixer maintenance takes a little extra effort

On a recent trip into California we found a company that is the World Champion of mixer cleanliness. The guys at River City Rentals have set a very high bar for their equipment maintenance programs, and their Cart-Away portable concrete mixers are a great example of this effort.

Cement mixing has always been a bit messy – Requiring attention to good clean-up procedures in order to extend mixer life. Consistent cleaning is particularly important in a rental business where most customers don’t feel responsibility for keeping the equipment maintained.

1-year old – Like New!

At River City Rentals in Auburn they have established a policy that every portable concrete mixer that returns to the yard receives a wash-down before going back out. They use a pressurized washing system and industrial soap to knock off any concrete splatters or build up on the trailers as soon as the trailer gets back to the yard, and the results are fantastic!

These images are of Cart-Away mixing trailers that are over 1-year old and have delivered thousands of yards of concrete – yet they look brand new!

We are publishing these images as a challenge to the hundreds of other Cart-Away locations around the country.  We suggest that you take another look at your maintenance procedures for your portable concrete mixers and see if you can keep your trailers looking as nice as these.

Portable Concrete Mixer Evolution – East Coast Tour

Touring cement mixer locations in the east

I spent the past week traveling in Pennsylvania and Maryland to visit companies that sell ready-mixed concrete in the region.  Many of these locations have been providing small batches of concrete to local contractors and homeowners for over 30-years. Some of these portable concrete providers also rent equipment and others sell building materials along with the ready-mix. Regardless, this trip was a history lesson for a concrete geek like myself.

Portable concrete mixer history

Portable concrete delivery trailer

Single Axle Antiques

Using small trailers in the delivery of ready-mixed concrete started in the 1960’s, and some of the locations that I visited near Baltimore started selling concrete nearly that long ago. The delivery trailers where very different from the modern portable concrete mixers of today.  The interesting part of my trip is that most of the locations that I visited are still using very old single axle trailers to make the deliveries.

Old portable concrete batching system

Antique concrete batching

Even though they are still nursing along the antique trailers, some have upgraded their concrete mixing and batching equipment over the years. But most are still relying on ready-mix technology that was developed during the 1980’s!

These old auger mixers replaced the original paddle-style mixer of the 60’s, but were still extremely slow and very messy during clean-up.

NOTE: These images were taken at a location that was shut down by the local government due to the environmental impacts from cleaning-out the auger over many years of operation. It cost the owner a huge fine, site remediation work and the loss of hundreds of thousands of dollars in sales.

The West leads the way…

Coming from the West, I was shocked to see so many of these old systems still working. It was like going back in time as I witnessed fleets of old tub trailers and rusting auger batch plants. By comparison, I could count on one hand the number of locations in California that would still have a single axle tub trailer rusting away in their bone yard.

Today the portable ready-mix suppliers of the West use dry-batch loading systems and portable concrete mixing trailers that are considerably more environmentally friendly and very efficient.  What is also eye opening is that the sales volumes per location has grown faster in the West than in many of these other locations that still rely on the old technology.

To be fair to the Eastern ready-mix operators, there are some who have upgraded and use the modern technology, but they are still in the minority.  What many of these operators do not realize is what great competitive risk that they face from others who would enter their markets with more efficient and desirable portable mixer systems. We have seen this happen many times in western communities.

Interesting history lesson

My tour was very enlightening… I was in the “Cradle of the Constitution” where the history of America’s freedom started. So, it seems fitting that I witnessed portable concrete mixer operators attempting to keep the past alive in Maryland and Pennsylvania.

Portable Cement Mixer fund raising

Haiti to benefit from better concrete production

Joel Troyer is a man on a mission… A mission for stronger buildings in Haiti.

Portable cement mixer for HaitiAfter doing some volunteer work in the earthquake ravished nation, Joel decided that they needed a portable cement mixer in order to build back better. He came home and started searching for the appropriate mixing device.

His search lead him to the Concrete MD cement mixer, designed for very remote building locations. The mixer met his specifications and so he began a fund-raising campaign in his community.

Joel enlisted the help of may individuals and organizations in order to coordinate the purchase and shipment of the mixer into Haiti. In addition to funding, he made sure that the new concrete mixer will be used by a Haitian entrepreneur in order to make a living selling concrete in the community.

We salute the work of Mr. Troyer and the people who helped to make this cement mixer project benefit the people of Haiti.

The Concrete Cash Cow – Decorated Cement Mixer

DC has decorated concrete cows, but Cart-Away has Cash Cows

Someone is mixing a little fun into the Maryland workday using the local concrete cows. They are sneaking around decorating the bovine and adding some entertainment for the community.

Decorated Cow remindes that Concrete mixer can be like a cash cow

This story reminded me that we had called the Cart-Away concrete mixer  “The Concrete Cash Cow” at one time. We even dressed-up a cement mixer drum to look like a spotted milk cow for a trade show in Vegas!

Here are the silly words from a flyer we produced for the show…

Cart-Away is your opportunity to earn great profits with a simple system.

It’s like owning a cash cow…  You get all the cream without the crap!

cement mixer cash cowCart-Away concrete is a construction supply system that stands apart from the herd of other business opportunities.

Great profits from these supplies are just the start. Cart-Away is a unique customer controlled delivery system. That is why our slogan is: We Load, You Deliver.

You own a fleet of these cash cows. You have concrete mix trailers that you load with fresh ready-mix and your customer drives off to their job-site pulling the trailer. It’s not complicated at all- just like sitting on a three-legged mix stool…

With our support you can milk your share of the 25 billion dollar construction materials market.  This a profitable field to join and great opportunities are available today, so give us a call.

Cart-Away Concrete Mixers are Outstanding in their Field…

We all had a little fun with this promotional adventure just like those who are decorating the concrete cows in Maryland.

Portable Concrete Mixer riding the Rails

The current cost of diesel fuel has trucking companies scrambling to find ways to save.

This past week showed us another example of what truckers mean when they say “load-consolidation”.  We loaded a portable concrete mixing trailer up onto some bridge rails at the back of his load!

portable cement mixer on railsEveryone knows that the Cart-Away 1.75 cubic yard MixKing is the biggest mixing trailer on the road. Now we can also state that it is the biggest mixer trailer on rails as well….

We have to admit that this loading configuration makes for an excellent display presentation. It probably garnered a bunch of attention between here and the Midwestern destination…

Portable Concrete Mixers Starting to Ship

For the past few years the construction economy has been slow, and so has the sale of portable concrete mixers. We are cautiously optimistic that things are improving.

This full truckload of 1-yard concrete mixing trailers is headed out to support a new Cart-Away Concrete location. There are more concrete batching plants and trailers ready to load on the trucks.

It is nice to see the factory pumping out a steady stream of Cart-Away portable mixers again!

Thanks… New and Old Customers, alike!

Portable Concrete Mixers – From people in your shoes

Portable concrete mixer owners surveyWhat makes Cart-Away Concrete Systems different from others who service the portable concrete mixer industry? Initially we couldn’t put our finger on the differences until we heard a common story echoing back to us from our customers who said – “You guys have been in our shoes…”

We wanted to test this sentiment and so we created a statement concerning Cart-Away and then tested it in an email survey to 295 of our customers. Here is the Story of Cart-Away that we included in the survey:

“Starting in the 1990’s Cart-Away revolutionized concrete. Cart-Away’s field-experience combined with their durable equipment has created hundreds of success stories in concrete. Today, many businesses rely on the experienced team at Cart-Away to move them from start-up to success with concrete”.

In the email we asked the respondents if they agreed, totally disagreed, strongly agree or slightly disagreed with the story. We had 101 people open the email and review the statement.

From those who responded back we where relieved to find that only 5% slightly disagreed and nobody totally disagreed!

But what we are proud to report that 40% agreed with our story and 55% marked strongly agree… That is 95% who think that our story is accurate!

To be completely transparent we must also report that we offered everyone who responded to the survey a $10 dollar parts credit – so I am sure we skewed a few of the “agree-sided” responses. Even with the incentive we believe that our survey results are positive…

This survey has been helpful in confirming our story, but we received better information than we could have imagined. We got sincere feedback that we had never received before, and we are using it to improve our service.

Here is an example from someone who slightly disagreed with the statement: “Part of the statement is true – part is not.  We feel your company has minimal support.”

We need this type of feedback in order to understand how some view our customer service. The customer service department has been directed to reach out to this particular customer and find out where we have fallen short in giving complete support. We are committed to making necessary adjustments and turning this customer into someone who would agree with all of the Cart-Away Story.

We also heard from customers who have found things in our products that concerned them, so our engineering and production teams have reached out to understand ways that the product can be improved and better meet their needs.

For balance we will share just one of the positive responses that was offered: We strongly agree that you guys (are) very helpful and easy to work with, you have helped us many times (with) very prompt service!”

This project has been very helpful in refining our story and developing our plans for better customer service.

If you have a minute or two, we would love to hear your thoughts on this process.
